2023 Weingut Eichholz – Irene Grünenfelder Chardonnay
Braucht Luft.

The 2023 Chardonnay shows a clear, intense and elegant, still reductive nose with ripe and fleshy fruit aromas yet also refreshing citrus and leafy notes. Creamy and round on the palate, with subtle acidity in the background, this is a full-bodied, very intense and elegant Chardonnay with an intense and persistent finish carried by fine tannins and bitters. It's still not in balance and expresses the roundness of the 2023 vintage. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in March 2024.
The wine comes from 15-year-old vines that Johannes has been cultivating since 2018 and has been fully responsible for since 2021. He is still in the "discovery phase," he admits, preferring to bottle his Chardonnay in late summer/early fall, which he plans to do in the future. He wants to take his 2023 out of the barrels in July (30% new) and bottle it in August. Only about half of this wine underwent malolactic fermentation.
Irene Grünenfelder's son Johannes Hunger has joined the business, which turned 30 last year and is no longer a one-woman show. The grapes in Jenins grow on a total of seven hectares in the Eichholz cru of Jenins, where the recently modernized and future-proof domaine is also located. Pinot Noir plays the main role, with Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for the white varieties and Diolinoir and Merlot for the Port-style Dioli. The soil consists of weathered primary rock, is rich in lime and has a considerable proportion of clay. The slate structure regulates the water balance in a natural way. The vines are cultivated according to organic criteria in order to promote the biodiversity of soil organisms and keep the soil alive. "Only a vital soil brings finesse and expressiveness as well as unique flavors to the wine," says Johannes, who offers three different Pinot Noirs, three white wines and a sparkling wine. I have tasted a selection of wines, including older vintages of Pinot Noir. It is a pity that these wines remain in Switzerland, the more so since I expect they will further improve in the next years.
