Another sublime wine. A moderate deep greeny/gold hue. The palate is quite mature: wet wool which reminds me of a Chenin Blanc, but very pure with a touch of flint. Beautiful balance on the palate with good acidity, very minerally with a waxy texture. Very intellectual wine with a touch of walnuts on the finish. Very good length. Guffens' Chablis offerings continue to enthrall me. What do you have when you combine superb richness, exquisite ripeness, and enough acidity to bore through the Sixth Fleet? Verget's 1996 Chablis Fourchaume. Malty vanilla scents are followed by a super-ripe, rich, medium-bodied, concentrated, and sharply acidic character. Highly focused flavors of crisp red berries, spicy oak, lemons, and steel are found in this teeth-clenchingly bright offering. As I tasted this bracing Fourchaume I remembered a comment Guffens once made to me, "the best way to de-acidify a wine is to make it richer." Anticipated maturity: 2002-2009. A year ago, Jean-Marie Guffens told me that 1996 was the greatest vintage of his lifetime. While he did not repeat that comment when I visited him in November, Guffens was bursting with pride as I tasted the wines.

It is a massively concentrated and extracted, yet racy and bright wine. Its awesome finish appears to last for a minute, revealing traces of nuts, white fruits, and smoky flint. The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. A year ago, Jean-Marie Guffens told me that 1996 was the greatest vintage of his lifetime. Guffens' Chablis offerings continue to enthrall me. The 1996 Chablis Valmur, while not quite as mind-blowing as the 1995, is a stunning wine. Rich aromas of liquid minerals, white flowers, red berries and sweet oak notes are followed by a broad, full-bodied, and supremely complex character. Silky-textured, deep, and broad, this steely offering is filled with flint, metals, minerals, and dried herbs. As with its older brother, the 1995, this Valmur has an unbelievably long, precise, and pure finish. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012. With scents of licorice and spices, the Corton Charlemagne is an explosive wine. A massive burst of spicy vanilla oak, followed by ripe tangy red currants and roasted peaches lead to an unbelievably long finish. This monstrous, full-bodied wine is spectacular, yet is capable of aging splendidly for 12+ years. This wine is vinified in wood and aged in oak casks, which can be new or up to 4 years old. It was not filtered, but was fined as Guffens says that tiny particles of bacteria that can create off flavors need to be removed from white wines (the reality may be that Verget is a large commercial operation that cannot afford to have its clients rejecting bottles because of sediment. It is telling that Guffens neither filters nor fines the wines he makes at his private estate.) A note on availability: Verget's top wines are sold on pre-arrival, making them very hard to find after they have been reviewed. I apologize for this inconvenience and will make every effort to taste them prior to their offering in the coming years.

The wine's bouquet bursts from the glass with intensely sweet tropical fruit aromas. On the palate, this compelling offering reveals massively powerful and rich layers of metals, nuts, liquid minerals, hazelnut butter, and traces of almond candies. This wine is full-bodied, thick, and magnificently rich, yet it is also refined, delineated and precise. Drink this extraordinary Corton between 2004 and 2012+.

Beautifully made, and with the same extraordinary length as the Remilly, this fat, silky, and complex wine contains layers of sweet floral and perfumed fruits. It will provide immediate pleasure and last for 12+ years. This wine is full-bodied, powerful and stunning. This wine is vinified in wood and aged in oak casks, which can be new or up to 4 years old. The Pouilly-Fuisse displays flint, metal, and stone aromas as well as a silky-textured, focused, medium-bodied, and bright personality filled with powerful and persistent flavors of gravel and lemon peel. It should be at its best between now and 2003. Both of Guffens' Pouilly-Fuisse's are first rate. How does he do it? He starts by reserving as much top-flight grapes as he can from growers. Then he vinifies the wine and sorts out cuvees he does not like, selling them to other negociants (last year Guffens sold 28,000 liters of Pouilly-Fuisse to other merchants, enough to make 37,300 bottles, or more than 3,100 cases).

Yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare were slightly higher than the 15-20 achieved in 1996. This is a wine for those who cannot find or afford to purchase Rayas. 2001 – 2017.

I am convinced the 1990 is the best Trevellon to date. It possesses an opaque purple color, a huge nose of minerals and cassis, full-bodied, lusciously rich, beautifully balanced flavors buttressed by adequate acidity, moderate tannin, and plenty of glycerin. The finish is long and exhilarating. Still an infant in terms of its development, this wine already makes a gorgeous drink. Based on previous efforts, it should last for a decade or more - if you can keep your hands off it. The wine was bottled unfiltered, so expect considerable sediment to develop.

In the mid-seventies, I paid a visit to the rustic appellation of Madiran, several hours south of Bordeaux. I met proprietor Alain Brumont, but had no way of knowing at the time that he would emerge as the appellation's most energetic and quality-driven producer. Brumont has always produced very good wine for near-term drinking, but the 1995 Montus Cuvee Prestige, a 100% Tannat (the local grape), aged in 100% new oak, is a wine for drinking around 2010 or later. In fact, most readers would be advised to buy this wine for a child born in 1995, as opposed to purchasing it for personal consumption. As the grape's name implies, it is a tannic wine, although this is not a wine that is harsh and astringent without the balancing fruit. The color is an opaque black. The wine possesses a magnificent, sweet, pure nose of cassis, black plums, and subtle new oak notes. Extraordinarily deep and full-bodied, with layers of concentrated, jammy fruit, a formidable tannin level, and a monster finish, this is unquestionably one of the great 1995s (and I am including all my top picks from Bordeaux). Do not be surprised if it outlives anything produced by Montus's more renowned siblings to the north. The Cuvee Prestige will demand 15-20 years of cellaring. These are unreal wines that are purely made, remarkably rich, and so complete and promising that they cannot be ignored.

Made from 100% Tannat, this wine is unquestionably the most concentrated, massive wine I have tasted from Madiran. Massively endowed, and oozing with layers of super-ripe, concentrated, unctuously-textured fruit, this full-bodied, tannic wine should age effortlessly for 20 or more years. It is an extraordinary achievement!

This blockbuster, backward 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon rivals Girard's Reserve as one of the most powerful, tannic wines of the vintage, but there is more sweetness and a higher level of concentration and ripe fruit in the Laurel Glen offering, making its aging potential less risky. This is a huge, massive, herb, blackcurrant/black-cherry, smoky, chocolatey wine with gobs of fruit, eye-popping extract levels, and mouthsearing tannin. Based on this barrel sample, my best guess for the wine's anticipated maturity is between 2002-2025. Impressive! But patience is definitely required. Laurel Glen has been producing one dazzling effort after another, especially since 1990. The wines are agonizingly difficult to find in the marketplace. (RP)

Tiefdunkelrote, aber immer noch transparente Farbe. Die Nase zeigt reife und rote Beerenfrucht, helle Kräuterwürze und auch mineralische Frische. Gute Intensität, saftig, weich und doch auch griffig der Auftritt am Gaumen, so schmeckt Priorat. Hat Schmelz, Körper, Fülle und Saftigkeit. Wer die kraftvollen und süsswürzigen Weine aus dem Priorat liebt, wird hiervon begeistert sein. Geniessen Sie ihn jetzt bis ca. 2030.

The regional red 2022 Els Pics was produced with Garnacha, Cariñena and small amounts of Merlot and Syrah from different vineyards and soils. The wine achieved very high ripeness in the warm and dry year, reaching 14.7% alcohol. It fermented in concrete with a short maceration and, depending on the variety, matured in barrique, foudre or concrete for 14 months. It has a nose of strawberry jam, and it's rich and juicy, tender and with fine tannins, easy to drink. 60,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2024.
